City to Stop Importation of Chickens
Poultry markets in Shenzhen stopped importing chickens coming from the city of Heyuan in Guangdong after the recent discovery of the H7N9 virus in one of its poultry sample in Dongguan. The virus was discovered in a chicken that is imported from a Heyuan farm.
The provincial center for disease control and prevention said that the chickens in that particular batch were sold in Dongguan , not in neighboring cities. Plus the amount sold in Shenzhen is only small. Most of the chickens sold locally come from the cities of Qingyuan, Maoming and Zhanjiang and at neighboring provinces such as Jiangxi, Hunan and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Wholesalers are required to provide quarantine certificates, disinfection certificates and transportation certificates before they are allowed to sell chickens in the local market. Contrary to reports, city officials have no plans in closing poultry markets or centralizing slaughter houses since there is no evidence of the virus found in the markets.
