Greatest Irish Pub on Planet!! or at least Shenzhen
My heart fluttered when I saw that a “proper” Irish pub was coming in across the street from my apartment at Peninsula One, just too good to be true, especially after enduring the toxic waste site “saloons” found along the Rose Garden. I waited with anticipation for its opening and wanted to be its first customer, what a welcome gift, the Irish in me twirled round & around singing “Rattlin’ Bog” and “Johnny at the door”. Sweet home Ireland!
My first impression was AMAZEMENT at the beauty of the bar. Rumour said it was originally brought in from Ireland, and I can believe it. This location has lots of room at the bar, it stands above many Irish pubs I have seen even in Europe, America & the rest of the world. However, I was initially let down when Peninsula One started out slow with weak service and typical non-attentive Chinese wait-staff. Yes, the Guiness was “heavenly” but I go to bars to congregate and love to talk to the crew, this was not possible. I was very disappointed but continued to frequent there in spite of it.
Then, suddenly, things changed. Now, there is a vibrancy and “spark” in the staff, they make you feel important and at home. Perhaps it was the managers who are sincerely dedicated to pleasing and now it has become the opposite of how it started out? I don’t know but the bartenders have now become the best I’ve seen in Shenzhen by far and the wait-staff is engaging, bordering on bubbly, certainly warm and inviting. What happened?
Last night I had the best baked ham since home in States and a side potato dish served up by Brad, an amazing Head-Chef from Canada. It was indicative of the standards they strive for. It is far and away my favourite pub by a mile! The fajitas on Friday are half/price and are the best deal in town. The burgers are big and the fries are served HOT. The menu is extensive and delicious; great steaks, Thai dishes, & my favourite: Mexican. Obviously there is some major effort to provide not just a dynamite authentic pub look but also “feel”. Well done indeed, this is a jewel. I never would have thought the staff could transcend the beauty of their bar, but they have. And I certainly enjoy it and highly recommend it to anyone.
