Tunnel and Overpass Projects to be Completed this Year
City transport officials are saying that the Xincai Passage tunnel project will be finished by the end of this year. Also known as the northern extension of the Caitian Road, the entire Xincai Passage will open and provide a new north to south connection between FUtian CBD and the developing clusters in Longhua New Area.
The 3.25-kilometer long passage is a two way six laned urban road that includes a 1.67 kilometer tunnel that passes through Meilin Mountain and interchange flyovers that connects with Caitian and Huanggang roads. The existing Huanggang Flyover on Caitian will be expanded to six lanes from the current four lanes. Also a 1 kilometer part of Huanggang road will be closed at least six months to give way to the expansion project that will start in October.
Once completed the passage will greatly relive traffic at Meilin Checkpoint and will allow commuters heading from Longhua and Minzhi to downtown Shenzhen and avoiding traffic jams at Meilin. An overpass that links Huanggang road and Caitian road will also be completed this year and allows northbound vehicles on Caitian road to access Huanggang road using the overpass. Two other overpasses will be built to link Caitan and Huangggang roads and tunnels.
Once the overpasses are completed, drivers going to Bantian and Meiguan Expressway using Meilin Checkpoint can drive directly onto an overpass and drivers to Longhua and Minxhi can use the tunnel to avoid traffic jams at the north end. Vehicles from Longhua New Area the tunnel will be able to directly detour onto Caitian or Huanggang roads using the overpasses.
