Residents Hopes Government to Consider Cancellation of Tolls on Local Expressways
Several residents are saying that the toll costs and delays are bottlenecking the economic development of local districts and are now calling for the cancellation of the toll fees on local expressways which will include Shuiguan and Meiguan Expressways. When the Guangdong Provincial Government have cancelled 31 expressway toll as off yesterday, residents are also hoping the government would cancel local tolls as well.
One resident said that he drives along Longda Expressway everyday and pays 9 yuan and it is too expensive for him. He also argued that since Longgang and Bao’an district are already part of the Special Economic Zone in Shenzhen for more than three years now it seems unreasonable to charge toll on vehicles on roads within the city. A deputy for the City Municipal People’s Congress said that its unrealistic for the government to cancel toll on expressways all at once instead he suggested that the government should cancel tolls on one to two expressways a year. The cancellation of the 31 expressway tolls removes the tolls on 651 kilometers of roads in the city.
There are still six expressways in Shenzhen are still charging toll fees namely Yanpai, Jihe, Qingping, Nanguang, Meiguan and Shuiguan. These expressways contractual toll periods end on 2025 or 2027 expect for Nanguang Expressway where it toll period is until 2033. Guangdong launched their toll cancellation measure last June 2011 and since 2012 it has already cancelled 109 fees and 41 tollgates on ordinary roads. The province also lowered the standard toll rate on several expressways.
