Shenzhen Ports Outputs Surpasses Hong Kong
For the first half of the year, Shenzhen ports reached a throughput of about 11 million standard cargo containers surpassing Hong Kong total. During the first half of the year Shenzhen ports handled around 115.6 million tons of cargo which is a 4.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Even with a trading decline in June, the ports still saw an increase in cargo throughput.
A spokesperson for the transportation commission said that the increase can be attributed to the growing number of cargo containers being transferred from Shenzhen port in the first half of the year. Yantian International Port in the east saw an increase of 30 percent, Chiwan Port had a 17 percent increase and Dachanwan Port saw increase of 15 percent. Hong Kong saw and handled around 10 million cargo containers in the first half or a 7.7 decrease from last year and only 344,000 containers fewer than Shenzhen.
Experts say that several uncertain factors may have prevented the port’s throughput for rapidly growing such as a slow global economy.
