Park to be Created to Help Preserve Ancient Trees
In efforts to protect ancient trees, the urban management bureau said that they will be building a park in the Pingshan New Area. The latest survey found out that Pingshan houses more than 153 ancient trees which includes a variety that are common in Guangdong Province ranging from longan, mango trees, camphor and banyan.
Twenty of these trees are older than 200 years old, eight trees are between 80 to 99 years of age with the oldest is said to be 362 years old. The survey also showed that most of this ancient trees are in good physical condition, but the longan trees are said to have problems from parasitic plant damage to pests. These ancient trees in the area are being taken cared of on a regular basis, but it is not enough. To further protect the trees a more advance measure should be used and introduced in order to protect the environment better.
Pingshan plans to build a protection park in Xialiao Village in Kengzi since the village has the largest number of ancient tress in the area. Based on Shenzhen regulations several organizations and individuals can be fine of up to 20,000 yuan for transporting or cutting ancient trees without the approval of the city government. Serious violations can cause jail time.
To promote further protection of these ancient trees, the urban management bureau is planning a new regulation on a forestation management. The regulation which is set to be reviewed by the city’s legislature, states that organization or individuals will be fined 200,000 to 500,000 yuan for damaging and cutting ancient trees.
