Concerns Raised on Inefficient Use of Public Bicycle Spaces
A growing public concern is seen on the lack of public bicycle spaces at Metro stations as existing parking spaces were not used efficiently. An increasing number of residents are indeed taking advantage of the Metro network expansion in the city are using bicycles in going to station, but are hesitant in leaving their bikes in bicycle parking areas over safety concern.
Residents riding their bikes to Shenzhen North Railway Station are usually disappointed by the lack of parking places. Usually it takes only a few minutes for residents living in the subsidized housing development to the station. Shenzhen North Railway Station is the traffic hub for all high speed rail, buses and Metro lines. Most of the applicants of the subsidized housing located near the Shenzhen North Railway Station are college graduates that rely on their bikes as their main source of transportation since it’s more convenient and safe for the environment.
Only Xiangmihu and Hongshan Stations are piloting bicycle parking booths but are not being used efficiently. A resident living near the Xiangmihu Station said that he is not parking his bicycle in the public parking near the railway entrance due to the lack of security. While parking space outside of Hongshan Stations are hardly used. Furthermore the Metro stated that they are not responsible for the security if the personal belongings that are left in the parking area.
Other residents living by Baishizhou Station tend to lock their bicycles to handrails near Metro exits since there are not designated parking areas.
