Majority of Foreign Doctors Practice at Private Hospitals in Shenzhen
There are 29 registered foreign doctors are working at hospitals in Shenzhen, one work for the University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital while the rest are employed at private hospitals across the city.
These doctors seldom see patients in Shenzhen, just like the South Korean doctors at Shenzhen Sunshine Hospital that only comes by twice a month. Two British dentists at Dental Bauhinia come to Shenzhen only on weekends from Hong Kong. Australian dentist Zac Morse is the only dentist who sees patients on average. Morse came to Shenzhen in 2011 and fell in love with the city and has enjoyed working in the city. Another doctor from India also moved to Shenzhen to work at C-Mer Dennis Lam Eye Hospital in Futian is planning to practice in Shenzhen for at least five years and if patients grow to like her she might stay longer.
A spokesperson for the city’s health commission said that foreign doctors have a limited market of patients in Shenzhen. They mostly serve foreigners that are living and working in Shenzhen and Chinese people who have lived, worked or studied abroad. Foreign doctors also charge more compared to Chinese doctors since they are practicing at private hospitals.
Based on national policies, foreign doctors can practice in Shenzhen if only they are invited by any medical organizations in the city and their local medical license is renewed every year.
