City Explores the Possibility of Opening a Second Airport
City officials are planning to construct a second airport at Pingshan New Area. The decision to build a second airport came after a remark from a local transport expert which suggested that the city needs another airport. Pingshan is a potential site for the proposed airport since it’s within proximity of downtown Shenzhen, Hong Kong and other delta cities.
By placing another airport in Pingshan will turn the area into a new transportation hub by add connections to Xiamen-Shenzhen and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high speed railways. The nearest station in Pingshan is Xincheng Station which is 40 kilometers from Futian and only 69 kilometers from West Kowloon. Train rides will take less than 30 minutes in reaching central districts of Shenzhen and Hong Kong after the railways are fully operational.
Shenzhen has been exploring the possibility of building a second airport since 2008, and it’s good that the city is now considering opening a second airport. Terminal C is scheduled to open in a few months which are designed to handle 450 tons of cargo and 45 million passengers a year by 2020, and no other plans or options were made after that.
The Shenzhen International Airport located in the northwest part of the city is surrounded by four other airports, but because of its distance from Yantian , Dapeng, Longgang and Pingshan areas that are rich in tourism resources and can’t reach its full potential. Other Chinese cities that have two airports are Shanghai and Beijing which is planning to add another airport 48 kilometers from Tian’anmen.
