12th National Games to Run Until September 12 at the Olympic Sports Center
China’s President Xi Jingping opened the 12th National Games with a spectacular but scaled down ceremony at the Olympic Sports Center in the capital city of Northeast China Liaoning Province. Dubbed as China’s mini-Olympics is scheduled to run until September 12.
This will be the first time in Guangzhou that the opening ceremony was held during the day and without fireworks since the budget was brought down to 9 million yuan from 90 million yuan marking a big adjustment in the format of this year’s National Games as the Central Government new policy of practicing thrift management. No large scale performances were made compared to the last previous multi major sports event and the opening ceremony only to two hours to finish.
The National Games will have 31 events including the 28 sports that might be included in the 2016 Olympic Games, unlike the 33 events during the National Games in Shandong 4 years ago. The number of athletes that participated in this year’s games is at 9,770 which are 1,220 short compared to Shandong the number of journalists was also brought down to 1,000.
