University Starts New Semester with New Students
388 new students have started to arrive and start their university life at the new campus of the South University of Science and Technology of China which will bring the number of students to 616. 45 of the students came from Guangdong Province, including the 23 students from Shenzhen and the rest came from different areas and nearby provinces.
The new students have performed quite well in this year’s National College Entrance Exams with an average score was 75 points which is higher that the entrance scores that was required by key universities. 87 of the students came from rural villages and the youngest student hails from Henan Province along with the first pair of twins to study at the university.
Mayor Xu Qin gave the keys to the new university to its president Zhu Qingshi during the opening ceremony which marked the start of new campus three years after it was built. The new campus has 1.94 million square meters and a floor space of 630,000 square meters. There are 32 building ranging from teaching halls, laboratories, administration hall and dormitories are included in the first phase of the university.
A total of 129 professors and teachers were hired with two are national academicians and two more at national level together with other well known professors. 85 percent of its faculty members are holders of doctoral degrees an 90 percent have taught professionally overseas.
