City Proposes the Installation of Rainwater Collection System
Although the rainwater recycling industry is still in its initial stage and is progressing slowly its development is giving hope. Currently only one residential community is using rainwater recycling collector which was brought down from Australia by Woerrun Rainwater Technology Co.
The rainwater collectors are buries 70 centimeters underground and is capable of collecting, filtering and draining off rainwater. The filtered rainwater can be used in flushing toilets, taking baths or showers and washing clothes. By collecting rainwater will greatly reduces costs for water consumers such as car washes, spas and golf courses. Although installing rainwater collecting system is a little expensive it can be used at least 70 years which makes it a good investment. The city sees around 140 rainy days a year this including ten days of heavy rain, and the yearly precipitation exceeds 3 billion cubic meters but the city local reservoirs and rivers can only store 500 million cubic meters of water.
Like many other Chinese cities, Shenzhen is suffering from water shortage and local water resources can only meet 20 percent of the total demand of the city and unused heavy rainwater usually leads to flash floods in the city. In 2000 city officials, advisers and environmental experts are pushing rain water recycling plans but have not caught on.
Collected rain water can be used during droughts or during peak water use periods and will greatly relieve the water shortage in the city.
