Li Reaches Semifinals of US Open, Faces Williams Next
Li Na defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 in the quarterfinals to become the first Chinese player to reach the semifinals of the US Open. After two and a half hours of playing Li sealed her victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium celebrating as the New York crowd cheered.
Li said that this will be her first time to reach the semifinals and she was proud of herself of her achievement and hard work. Li is also the only player in China to win a Grand Slam singles title. Although Li was not at her best during the match as she lost the second set as both players were fighting off winds, still Li played point by point to win.
Li became the forefront of Chinese women rise to tennis enjoying great success, in 2011 she became the first Chinese to make a grand slam final after finishing runner up in Australia. A few months after she won the French Open and earlier this year made the finals of the Australian Open again.
Li will be facing world’s No. 1 Serena Williams in the semifinals.
