Japan Wins Bid to Host 2020 Olympic Games
Tokyo beats Istanbul to host the 2020 Olympic Games after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe delivered a plea to the International Olympic Committee saying that the country’s nuclear plant problem was already under control. Japan won by 60 votes against Istanbul’s 36 votes
Japan’s Prime Minister left the group in Russia to pitch his plea in a meeting in Buenos Aires and promised the International Olympic Committee that concerns the leak at Fukushima nuclear plant were unfounded. Abe said that the plant have never done and will never do any damage to Tokyo which is 230 kilometers away from the plant. He also said that until now there are no reports of health problems and there will be none in the future.
This will be the second time Tokyo won the right to host the Olympics having hosted it in 1964 when the games came to Asia. This will also be Istanbul’s fifth unsuccessful bid in the last six votes to host the summer Olympics. The countries delivered their pitch based on the appeal of a new region for the games and use it to be a vehicle to help bring peace in the Middle East. But the recent crisis in Syria and anti government demonstrations pushed down their bid.
Rio de Janeiro will be hosting the next summer Olympics in 2016.
