Artists Compete in a Graffiti Contest in Futian District
Over the weekend more than a hundred young people were divided into 18 teams that competed in a graffiti painting contest that was done on the 170 meter wall found along Zhongxin No. 2 Street in Futian.
Each of the 18 teams was given 6 meters of space to do the graffiti that will be based on the theme Urban Culture and Youth Culture. All painters had a good time and appreciated that they were allowed to show off their worked in such a prominent location. These artists were only allowed to paint their graffiti on walls found in remote areas, but this time there are allowed to do graffiti in the downtown area.
The competition was organized by the publicity department, public culture and sports development center of Futian that is also a part of the neighborhood art festival in the district. The center’s director Jian Dingxiong said that Shenzhen is an international and young city that needs more young people to display its urban culture
The graffiti painted will remain for six months. All of the competitors painted English letters together with abstract, complicated, simple or realistic designs with their painting which attracted residents nearby to come and view their work.
Graffiti started showing up ten years ago in cities such as Shanghai and Beijing were it was considered as street art. It was considered as illegal advertisement by more residents have started to accepted it as a representation of youth culture as urban development spreads.
