City to Do Massive Cleanup Campaign for Maozhou River
The city will be spending almost 2 billion yuan on an extensive campaign to clean up of Maozhou River. The Maozhou River Rehabilitation Project is set to be finished in 2015 is part of the larger Guangdong Clean Water Action Plan that was designed to improve environmental conditions in the Pearl River Delta.
Maozhou River is about 31 kilometers long that runs through Shenzhen Guangming New Area and Bao’an District and Chang’an Township in Dongguan. The plan clean up will involve a 19 kilometer section of the river that has turned black due to extensive pollution, because of this some of the residents are calling it the black river. Most of the rivers tributaries are filled with sewage and rubbish that is accumulated by nearby industrial complexes.
There are 250 factories are found near the river are known for its heavy polluting and this is also were one can find the largest population of migrant workers which kept the factories in businesses but did little to control the pollution.
The cleanup will include two water treatment plants along with other existing plants that have the capacity of handling around 900,000 tons of polluted water every day.
