City to Increase the Number of Rental Bicycles in the City
Officials will be increasing the number of rental bicycles in the city bringing the total number of rental bikes to 20,000 before the year ends to assist residents in commuting to work, to get around and for exercise. Also by starting next year a citywide public bicycle rental service system will be implemented which will address the problem of residents in using bikes across district lines.
Around 1,500 bicycles were placed into use in Longgang as part of the World Car Free Day and most of the bicycles available for rent were brand new and parked along Metro stations in the district. District officials said that they will implement a comprehensive public bicycle rental system starting December. As of the moment there are 140 bicycle rental stations around the city, 80 in eastern and 60 in western Longgang. While there are 300 bicycle rental stations citywide that rents out more than 9,000 bicycles.
The bicycles are managed by different organizations under district department supervision. Nanshan and Longgang have contracted out the rental system to private companies, while Futian and Luohu established their own government funded a system which is similar to Yantian. An expansion of the public bicycle rental system is being planned and will be launched this Sunday with around 1,800 bicycles up for rent.
