City Celebrates Festival Honoring the Elderly
The Double Ninth Festival is a traditional Chinese celebration that advocates filial piety and teaches respect to their elderly. Families and elderly parents were seen celebrating at Lianhua Hill Park and the festival was officially dedicated to senior citizens
Yesterday a majority of seniors and their families visited parks to celebrate by singing, dancing or going on climbs since its one of the most important activity for the Double Ninth Festival. And to help in the celebration teenagers and young adults joined the elderly in celebrating at the Shenzhen Gymnasium and staged performances and exhibitions. And during the festival’s closing Shenzhen Mayor Xu Qin promised to speed up the improvements of the services for the elderly and hopefully improve the quality of life for the city’s elderly.
There are eight day care centers for the elderly and the city is planning to add in the next five years thus bringing up the total number of care center for the elderly to 15. Several elderly people like being at the center since they can see people of their peers and spend the day talking which makes them happy. Most of these elderly are going to the Yuandong center for the elderly which is a first of its kind in the city that provides several services for them ranging from food preparation to medical care for those who are not capable of living by themselves.
