Guangdong Province to Require Cities to Integrate Card Functions to its Public Transportation
The Shenzhentong Company and Lingnan Pass Company have made agreements that will allow people use Shenzhentong cards in public transportation in several cities in Guangdong Province after upgrade to facilities are made to make the Shenzhentong cards function as same as the well known Lingnan Pass and has already began upgrading the scanning devices on several bus routes as trial.
Currently the Shenzhentong card has the functions of the Octopus card of Hong Kong and is rushing the upgrades to allow the functions of the Lingnan Pass to work before the year ends. The Guangdong Transportation department is requiring four cities to integrate its public transportation functions that will allow Lingnan Pass to be used by their system. Shenzhentong Co. have issued more than 20 million cards since it was launch, and is used for public transportation in the city, groceries, restaurants and fee based parking lots but China does not have a unified system of these type of cards.
Officials are saying that he upgrades will take time and is expensive, but to integrate the Shenzhentong card into the national system, the city needs to spend around 100 million yuan for the upgrades of its scanning devices. Also before the month ends eighteen more cities will be joining the national unified card system for public transportation bringing the total number of cities integrated to the national system to 35.
