Yao to Open After School Basketball Training Facility
Former NBA star Yao Ming recently announced that he has joined forces with the NBA in opening a extracurricular training facility for basketball under his name in hopes to help in improving the fitness levels and abilities of Chinese students. The NBA Yao School is open for teenagers that want to experience the joy of playing basketball and at the same time has the passion for staying healthy.
Yao said in a statement that the current fitness status of students in some schools due to giving academic performance more emphasis is starting to worry him. He said that he hopes that his school will provide a after school option for children and at the same time teach them the values of teamwork, to have confidence and discipline with themselves which cannot be taught thru books. Based on the results of the 2013 physical condition survey that was held in August that the fitness levels of teenagers and students have been declining and conditions such as myopia and obesity is on the rise especially among secondary and primary school students.
Yao said that children don’t learn everything from books, sometimes they need to experience life to learn lessons to make them into better persons. NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver and Yao agrees that the focus of the sports development in China is to win gold medals and create champions, but there are not enough activities in the country to enjoy sports and its benefits. Yao hopes by offering after school programs will improve the situation.
Starting in December the school will be recruiting students under 16 and include them in first three month training program which Yao himself will be developing.
