Shenzhen Awarded as Global Model for Promoting Reading by UNESCO
Shenzhen was awarded the honorary title of global model for promoting reading by UNESCO in Beijing as recognition of the city’s effort in their efforts to further improve resident’s literacy. The director general for UNESCO Irina Bokova stated that Shenzhen took the land in the development of creative and cultural industries in the country’s reform and opening up along with the practice of making creative and culture majors the driving force in the development.
The secretary general of the National Commission for UNESCO Du Yue have also stated that the city is persistent in promoting reading among its residents and their efforts have gained results and the city’s experience can be shared with cities worldwide. The city mayor has also received a certificate from UNESCO and has promised to play a more active role in the activities that are planned by UNESCO.
Shenzhen will be further expand their development in promoting reading as they scheduled to have its 14th Reading Month and annual event held to promote reading activities. Shenzhen’s publicity chief was also awarded with the Confucius medal in recognition of his efforts in helping to promote reading and the Chinese culture.
