Foreign Drivers Required to Take Written Test Before Applying for Chinese License
Local police recently told foreign drivers in Shenzhen that they still have to take the local test before driving in the mainland even when they are holders of international driver’s license. The increase of foreign population in the city led to the increase of foreign drivers as well as violations.
One foreigner was recently caught driving while under the influence of liquor and didn’t have a Chinese driver’s license was placed in jail for several days and caused him to miss his flight back to his home town. He was released and allowed to go home after ten days. Drivers holding a valid Hong Kong driver’s license are not required to take the exams when applying for the license, but the driver applying must be a Hong Kong native and his license was issued by the transportation department of Hong Kong. Licenses that are issued to non Hong Kong residents or international licenses in Hong Kong however need to take the written test when applying.
Foreigners who applied for motorcycle license are not allowed to drive around Shenzhen since motorcycles are not allowed in the city and violators caught using motorcycles will be fined and placed in jail for 15 days.
Applications from drivers with licenses issued in New Zealand or those who are issued licenses fro, Argentina, Thailand or Kenya and those who have provisional and probational licenses from Australia and Canada will not be accepted under any circumstances.
