Guangzhou to Build Network of Flood Tunnels
Guangzhou is plagued by frequent flooding especially during the rainy season and to help improve the rainwater drainage system, the city is seeking advice from specialists from home and abroad to design a tunnel network system.
The city will be investing around 25 billion yuan for the construction of the 86 kilometer tunnel network for the next ten years. According to the Bureau of Water Resources the project will consist of a main tunnel with seven branches 40 meters underground. The upgrade will increase the city’s anti flood capacities by tenfold and the tunnel network is designed to handle more than 1.5 million cubic meters of floodwater, along with the tunnel network are five drainage pump stations will be built.
Guangzhou’s executive vice mayor Chen Rugui said that the tunnel network will play a vital role in the turning the city into a new and modern metropolis. Although the construction of the tunnel network will involve different sectors, the government will be looking for advice from experts and will plans a feasibility study before any construction will start.
The head of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design Li Xiaojiang said that they have invited 20 experts including academics from the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The tunnel project is created to help protect the people from the wraith of nature. And building a tunnel for flood control is better that building a big street or landmarks.
