HH Gourmet Welcomes You
In the ever-changing and steadily growing city of Shenzhen, it is often difficult to find a place to just sit and relax, while enjoying fresh food and a good drink. Fortunately for those in the Shekou area, HH Gourmet, voted 2nd best bakery in the entire Pearl River Delta region, steps in to save the day! A small café/restaurant/bakery mix that offers fresh, homemade products, HH Gourmet makes one feel at home, taking an afternoon break from the bustling world around them.
Hailing from West Chester County, New York, owner and chief baker, Matt Klein has been a bagel-connoisseur from a young age. While living in Beijing, he met his wife, Huan Huan (for whom the café/restaurant is named after), and introduced her to the world of bagels and NYC deli staple foods. After further professional training in the United States, Matt and Huan Huan moved to Shekou in 2011 and opened their charming café/restaurant the following year.
Amid simple décor, soft ambient music, books and games to borrow, and a fresh breeze blowing through, carrying the delightful smells of freshly baked goods, it’s easy to wile away the hours at HH Gourmet. The soft hiss of the milk steamer behind the counter and the kind smiles from the staff make HH Gourmet a place of comfort and relaxation that also promises the freshest ingredients and food prepared with 100% homemade love.
Bagels are made fresh and include onion, garlic, salt, poppy, sesame, plain, and everything. The weekend bagel selection brings chocolate chip and raisin flavours to the table. With a variety of toppings including Lox and whipped cream cheese, HH Gourmet also offers biscuits & gravy, scones, muffins, and an assortment of breakfast and lunch sandwiches with your favourite bread or bagel. Customer favourites include #23, “Mark’s Sweet & Spicy BLT” as well as #19, “Kjelt’s Canadian Bacon Sandwich”. HH Gourmet also provides several vegetarian and vegan menu options such as #24, “Veggie Sandwich” and #17, “Vegan Supreme” made with roasted seasoned eggplant, zucchini, spinach, onion and mushrooms on rye. Side dishes include egg or potato salad, as well as the deliciously crunchy bagel chips. Thinly sliced, the chips have delicate hints of cinnamon and sugar for the sweet variety and a mix of onion and thyme with just the perfect amount of salt for the savory option.
The desserts are particularly addicting with soft and chewy oatmeal or chocolate chip cookies and #42, “Sour Cream Coffee Cake” which is rich, flavourful, and tastes just like the winter holidays at home. Perhaps most dangerous is #38, “English Toffee”, with a satisfying crunch and a to-die-for mix of super-sweet toffee, mixed with dark chocolate and almond bits. It makes an ideal pairing with HH Gourmet’s coffee, brewed from freshly ground beans, and promising a marriage of slight-bitterness, medium body, and delicious aroma. If coffee is not your drink of choice, they also offer a variety of freshly squeezed juices (solo or mixed), as well as their homemade soda flavours, and hot/cold teas, including their garden-picked mint tea.
HH Gourmet is conveniently located amid the small shops of Rose Garden (Phase 2) and offers free WiFi, streaming ESPN (when requested), and an outdoor seating & smoking area. Staff are helpful and pleasant when taking orders, and the café/restaurant is open to leashed pets, as one little dog was happy to discover.
HH Gourmet has several changing items of the day to choose from, and during the Jewish holiday season they offer Hanukkah specials. Unique to this café/restaurant is their current “Bagel-Off”, featuring a competition between 2 selected bagel flavours. Votes are cast and updated every two weeks, with the losing bagel knocked into the loser’s bracket and the winning bagel advancing to the next round (as well as being offered at ½ cost with cream cheese between 7-8am!).
Come visit Matt, Huan Huan and staff, and sample their delicious menu items! Drop by during the week, 7am-7pm Monday-Friday and 8am-7pm on the weekends to nibble more tasty treats, cast your bagel-of-choice vote, and let your worries slip away. With a fresh drink and homemade treat in hand, I’m sure HH Gourmet will quickly become one of your newest favourite places in Shekou!
