Shekou Port to Have New Ferry Terminal Soon
Based on a statement made by China Merchants Shekou Industrial Zone Co. that they will be constructing a new ferry terminal at the Shekou Port and is set to be completed in three years. according to a development plan the existing ferry terminal will have a new terminal and cruise ship center.
It was not known is the old terminal will be kept open during the time of construction of the new ferry terminal or any substitute terminal will be needed. The old ferry terminal has been the subject for criticism as it being outdated and aging compared to the new terminal of the Shenzhen International airport. The Shekou ferry terminal is more than 30 years old and people are already complaining on the limited space of the two story terminal and the lack of facilities such as escalators, insufficient food services and links to public transportation.
Passengers who frequently use the ferry services are complaining on the waiting hall that is usually filled to overflowing especially on weekends that passengers find it hard to stand in place and several people wait at Public Square which is outside of the terminal entrance.
Plans for the new ferry terminal were already approved in 2007 but no moves were made since. Local lawmakers say that the new terminal construction should be prioritizing together with the area’s development.
