Company Passes Request to Increase Toll Fees to Compensate Expenses
The company that is in charge of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway is asking provincial officials to allow them to increase the now expensive tolls due to the construction costs are nearly double that what they have expected. The expressway that links Dongguan, Guangzhou and Shenzhen is said to be fully open by December 28.
The expressway company has already applied for the increase in the toll fee due to the high costs of the project and is eagerly waiting for the response of the provincial transportation and pricing department. As of now the toll is at .6 yuan per kilometer or around 60 yuan for the whole expressway. The construction of the expressway cost around 300 million yuan per kilometer to build and the total cost has already reached 18 billion yuan from the previous budget of 10 billion yuan and the increasing prices of building materials as well. The cost of building the section in Shenzhen alone is at 30 billion yaun which is double the initial budget of 16 billion yuan.
Furthermore in 2003 the basic salary of a construction workers was at 40 yuan a day and is now at 200 yuan, the price of steel was at 2,000 yuan per ton is now at 5,000 yuan a ton. Compensation for land requisitions is now at 2,500 yuan from the 1,000 square meter in Dongguan, 5,500 yuan per square meter from the previous 1,600 per square meter in Guangzhou.
The final section of the expressway will end in Dongguan and is to be completed in December 28 then the whole line will be fully operational. the new expressway will shorten the distance between the two cities by one third of the whole distance of 122 kilometer trip of the Guangzhou Shenzhen expressway.
