Border Checkpoints Saw More Residents Crossing to Hong Kong for Christmas ShoppingOver the weekend border checkpoints saw heavy outbound resident’s crossing over to Hong Kong to do their Christmas shopping to take advantage of the discount season. Authorities said that most of the people crossing as just passing through Shenzhen and came from other mainland areas.

A lot of residents’ traveling said that they had to wait more than an hour to leave Shenzhen and another 40 minutes to enter Hong Kong. Residents with Shenzhen hukou that allows them to use e-channels and pass through quicker still needed to wait because of the long queues. Some were excited on their trip to Hong Kong that they talked about what they are planning to buy in Hong Kong with other people waiting in line. Other even bought luggage with them to place their purchased goods on their return from Hong Kong.

Although there are residents that travel to Hong Kong to shop frequently, complained on the large crowds but still look forward in shopping in Hong Kong. Most of the shoppers visit Hong Kong during the weekends and some were surprised to see such as large crowd at the checkpoints. Some think that the Christmas discount season attracts most of the people and some are spending more in Hong Kong since they can’t travel to Hong Kong as easily as those people living in Shenzhen.

Not only checkpoints were crowded with people traveling to Hong Kong but trains going to downtown Hong Kong, streets and shopping centers were crowded as well.
