China to Strengthen Environmental Protection of Water Sources
China is planning to strengthen its environmental protection of the Sanjiangyuan region of the Qinghai Tibet plateau which is the source of several important rivers. An altitude of 4,000 meters the name Sanjiangyuan literally means the source of three rivers in Chinese lies in the hinterland of West China’s Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and houses China’s largest and highest wetlands ecosystem.
The recently approved protection plan is aim to expand the rehabilitation area to 395,000 square kilometers from the previous 152,000 based on a statement released by the State Council. The plan stated that efforts will be focus in protecting and rehabilitating vegetation in the area and at the same time improve its monitoring and warning network for ecological conditions. On a separate plan on lakes that has relatively sound water was also approved during the meeting which called for the adjustment of the industrial structure and distribution in major lake area while strengthening pollution control for rivers that flows to lakes.
The plan also called for the strengthening of scientific management and strict protection rules and for greater government investment and a balance among environmental protection and economic development of its resident’s livelihood. Furthermore a blueprint in establishing a multifunctional ecological experimentation zone in China’s Gansu Province was already approved that will incorporate the conservation of water, industrial restructuring, ecological protection and resettlement.
