Li Na Prepares for Australian Open by Winning Shenzhen Open
Li Na overcame a stuttering start but eventually successfully defended her Shenzhen Open title against compatriot Peng Shuai 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 49 minutes and emerged victorious in the all Chinese final of the WTA Tour. Li trailed 3-4 in a showdown between the two top players in China and was able to bag seven of the next eight games to move ahead.
Peng was able to hold Li back by winning four in a row to take the lead 5-4 in the second set, but Li rebounded by winning the next three games to claim her eight WTA title and held back Peng’s wait for a maiden crown in her sixth singles final match in her career.
This is a great victory for Li who faced Zheng Jie in 2006 for the first all Chinese WTA finals but was forced to retire due to heat exhaustion at the Estoril Open in Portugal. The Shenzhen tournament is a warm up for the Australian Open and the first Grand Slam of the Season on January 13 in Melbourne.
