No News on Whether Provinces to Implement Toll Free Travel
The city transport authorities stated that they are still waiting for the notice from provincial authorities on whether expressways will be toll free during Spring Festival Eve on January 30. The State Council policies have required that the country’s highways should offer toll free travel to passenger vehicles with seven seats or less and motorcycles during the holidays.
Since the Spring Festival is not considered a national holiday this year, toll free travel is not mandatory. But sources are saying that the provincial transportation department might impose a toll free policy when expressways are seriously congested. Provincial authorities said that they might impose an intermittent toll free period during the eve of the festival depending on the severity of the traffic congestion. The city expects around 117 million people o travel to Guangdong during the 40 day Spring Festival travel season.
While no notice on whether toll free travel will be implemented, 18 provinces across the country are divided is they will be imposing tolls following the State Council policies that stated that the tolls will not be free and 12 provinces said they need further consideration.
Transport authorities fear that the different standards might easily cause disputes for cross province drivers. Furthermore some say by charging tolls on Spring Festival might even worsen traffic on expressways.
