Additional Sets of Trains to be Added on Longhua Line
Rail line operator HKMTR Shenzhen Co. will be operating two sets of six carriage trains on the Metro Longhua line starting January 26. The two sets of trains were expanded from four carriages that were initially used during rush hours to provide more rooms for passengers.
After the Spring Festival the railway will be adding two more sets of trains each month which will gradually increase the capacity of the rail line. The capacity will be increase by 50 percent after all of their 28 sets of trains will be expanded to six carriages by March 2015. The transition to a six carriage trains will involve several complicated engineering process that is related to signals, power, door and communication systems.The rail system can handle an average 410,000 passengers in a day and half of these passengers are using the service during the morning rush hour from 7:15 am to 9:15 am then during evening rush hours from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
Passengers have longed criticized the Longhua line for having constant crowds since their opening in 2011. The line only operates eight sets of trains when it was opened and has a departure interval of eight minutes. The number of trains was tripled in 2012 and the departure interval was reduced to two minutes.
