Couples now Allowed to Have Second Child in Zhejiang Province
Zhejiang is now the first province in the country to relax the one child policy. A couple with either parent is a single child in the province is now allowed to have a second child. Provincial leaders recently passed a revision to local rules and implemented the policy last Saturday.
In other news Guangdong authorities already submitted their application to central authorities in hopes to allow couples in which is one parent is a single child will be allowed to have a second child. Central authorities agreed to the new policy during the key meeting last November and the National People’s Congress has now given its approval on the revisions that was done three weeks ago. Before urban couples where only allowed to have a second child if both parents were only an only child.
Zhejiang’s population authorities estimate that an additional 100,000 babies will be born in five years as a result of the policy change. Details need to be worked out and implementing the new rules of the policy might pose challenges. The said implementation must be fair to everyone to ensure a great policy change which hopefully will not bring any new problems socially.
