Transport Officials Propose Extending Metro to Connect Shenzhen with Dongguan
A local deputy for the 12th Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress proposed that the transportation officials should make plans on extending the Shenzhen Metro Line 4 to connect with the future Line R4 in Dongguan. Also known as the Longhua Line which is also operated by the Hong Kong MTR and runs from Futian Checkpoint to Qinghu Station in Longhua New Area in which passengers can enter Hong Kong through the checkpoint
Based on the Shenzhen plan for the Phase 3 Metro projects, the Longhua Line will be extended 7.3 kilometers northward starting from Qinghu Station to Songyuan Bus Station in Guanlan. At the same time Dongguan is planning to built four Metro Lines with the line 4 running from Huangjiang Central Station to Qingxi Bus Station covering an area of more than 24 kilometers. Rail authorities are suggesting that the Longhua line should be extend further to Tangxia and will be an additional Station on the R4 Line. By doing this the two cities will be directly connected by the Metro system.
Authorities also said that the speeding up the construction of these transportation infrastructure is important for the economic the integration of the regions. By extending the Metro will facilitate the free flow of market elements such as capital, resources and talent between Shenzhen and Dongguan which will cultivate a common market. Shortening the distance between the two cities will further boost industries and expand the housing options of expats.
The cost of the construction of the Metro rail project will be shared by the Guangdong Provincial Government and the cities of Dongguan and Shenzhen.
