City to Implement Measures to Cut Down Smoggy Days
City officials are now planning measures that will limit the amount of smoggy days in the city in 2014 to at least 70 or below. The city is aiming to have an average of PM2.5 density of 33 micrograms per cubic meter. To help achieve these goals the local government is planning to unveil 40 measures that will improve the air quality in the city.
Last year the city released these measures that included new restrictions for all high polluting and yellow labeled vehicles, renovation and upgrades of power plants and strengthening the supervision of industrial supervision. City environmental authorities have launched a two month campaign to control such sources of dust related pollutants across the city and have charged 369 construction sites certain fees that reached more than 8 million yuan.
Last year the city recorded around 98 smoggy days which is 11 more days compared to 2012. During the fourth quarter of 2014 the city also recorded an average PM2.5 density of 61 micrograms which is 14 micrograms more that the fourth quarter of 2012. The increase of the PM2.5 was the result of unfavorable meteorological factors.
Since October the city has also seen a below average precipitation although it was not conducive to the dispersal of pollutants, the air quality should have improve as spring approaches.
