Fewer Companies and Agencies Purchasing Flowers this Year
Prices for local Spring Festival flowers is said to be lower this year compared to last year because of the shrinking demand coming from government agencies and State owned companies. The general manager for the Shenzhen Zhongke Garden and Flower Co. said that during the week before the Spring Festival they only sold 30 percent of their moth orchids, usually they sell 80 to 90 percent of their orchids during this time of the year. Several other florists in the city have expressed their concerns as well.
Local florists said that the decline in sale and low prices is due to the less demand as government agencies and State companies were restricting in buying festival gifts using public funds since last year. The general manager for Yitong Garden and Flower Co. said that this year no government agencies have ordered flowers. He also said that orders for festival flowers declined by 20 percent compared to last year as fewer agencies were buying flowers for decorations except for orange trees.
The most popular orange tress such as the citrus oleocarpa tanaka is selling fast in the city and smaller ones for family use are in short supply. The price for a small orange tree for family use has increased from 30 yuan to 45 yuan. Citrus oleocarpa tanaka means good luck every year in Chinese and families and companies purchases these trees to help them celebrate and bring in good luck for the new year in the Spring Festival.
