Project to Offer Free Rides to Residents Traveling Home during the Spring Festival
On the night that leads up to the Spring Festival on January 31and for the night after the holiday an estimated 3.6 billion Chinese nationals will be traveling to and from their hometowns to attend family reunions. Shenzhen residents leaving for their hometowns who still haven’t purchase any tickets for buses, trains or airlines or can’t drive have now a new option in traveling and its free.
A public welfare project is in the works that matches residents looking for free ride home with other people that are willing to drive them was announced yesterday in Xin’an Community in Bao’an. Those interested in the free rides or are willing to offer these rides can check out the details on the project’s website shunfengche.org or one can download the mobile app public benefit hitchhikes. The project intention is not to burden the volunteer on doing something good for others, the system will automatically match the people traveling along the same route at the same time.
The organizers said that by carpooling and sharing rides will help in cutting down carbon emissions that is the result from having separate trips. And to guarantee the safety of the driver and passengers, users need to register their real name and mobile phone number and sign a document. An insurance provider will also be providing a 30,000 yuan injury policy and 3,000 yuan medical insurance for each person that came along in the ride. Those giving out free rides will be reimbursed for tolls and other fees.
The project was first initiates by Wang Yong a Beijing entrepreneur along with other have helped more than a thousand people in traveling home for the Spring Festival in 2012 then when up to more than 9,000 in 2013. Before it was limited to Beijing based travelers and has extended to Shenzhen this year in which migrants is a big portion of the population. During the trial period more than a thousand people registered for the service in which almost all found rides home.
