New Subcompact Vehicle to be Developed by Geely and Volvo
Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd is planning to expand into a joint venture with Volvo Car Corp in designing a subcompact car that will meet the safety and quality standards of western markets where in Chinese brands have been known to struggle and again a foothold. Initial development of the new subcompact car will take place in Sweden and will allow the Chinese engineers access to markets in Europe and United States.
Based on the account of the executives emerging market automakers which will include the Chinese that had a hard time in meeting the vehicle safety and emission standards in the West, which also face reputational questions on the quality. Chinese firms are looking for ways that will meet European and US standards better such as hiring foreign talents in designing and making their cars just as Chery Automobile and Qoros Automotive did a move that paid off as it revived a five star score from the Euro NCAP a European testing protocol.
Although Geely’s subcompact is several years from completion and will be the first product to come from the joint venture which was announced last year from a family of small vehicles that is shared by Geely and Volvo the Zhejiang Geely Holdings Group which was bought by Volvo in 2010.
