Toll Gates at Meilin-Guanlan Expressway to be Removed
Five toll gates at the Meilin Guanlan Expressway between Meilin Checkpoint to Guanlan and Longhua New Area will be removed as these sections will have no more tolls starting April 1. In an agreement signed by the city transport commission, Shenzhen Expressway Shareholding Co., Longhua New Area and the Shenzhen Meiguan Expressway Co. said that the removal of the toll will allow commuters in the Longhua and Bantian area to drive to downtown Shenzhen using the expressway without paying any tolls.
Only the remaining 5.4 kilometer expressway found between Liguang Flyover and the Dongguan border will still have tolls. The 19 kilometer expressway is aprt of the National Expressway G94 that opened in 1995 that links downtown Futian with Longhua New Area, Bao’an and Longgang districts and connects with the Dongguan Shenzhen Expressway.
Vice director for the transportation commission Yu Baoming said that the agreement will require the government to shell out 2.7 billion yuan to make most of the expressway toll free which is a first deal of its kind in the country. As of the moment the owner of the expressway has contractual rights to charge the users of the expressway up to March 2027 that is expected to net the owner 1.5 billion yuan.
The practice of having a toll free expressway will effectively boost the development of the Longhua New Area and at the same time reduce the cost for residents living along the expressway.
