City to Introduce Pipe Upgrade Program to Provide Water to Residential Communities
City officials will be introducing a pipe upgrade program that will provide high quality drinkable tap water to around 100 residential communities before the year ends. The pipe upgrade program has provided potable water to more than 30 residential communities via direct access thus benefitting more than 10,000 households.
For this year another seven communities under the pilot program will get pipe upgrade which will include Meilinyicun in Futian. 200 kilometers of new or upgraded sewer pipes will also be added while the city upgrades its aging water pipes. 15 million yuan will be spent on the second stage of a planned drainage project that is intended to reduce water pollution at Houhai Bay. Also 40 million yuan will also be used to treat the pollution found in the Shenzhen River.
The existing water facilities in the city are capable of treating around 5 million tons of waste water a day, and reports has shown that the city was able to treat 1.44 billion tons of waste water last year. Shenzhen consumed about 1.9 billion cubic meters of water last year which is three times more amount of water found at the Sydney Harbor in Australia.
