Transportation Department Plans to Increase Tolls on New Riverside Expressway
The Guangdong Province transportation department is planning to increase the tolls on the new Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway. The department is planning o include the expressway in the pilot program that will adjust toll pricing standard for all expressways that are built from 2013 to 2017.
Authorities say that the expressway is currently underused and its operator is claiming to have losses of as much as 2 million yuan a day or 0.6 yuan per kilometer on expressways having more than six lanes. Toll standards can be adjusted and the standards will be related to several factors such as investment volume, reasonable return for investors and traffic flow. Furthermore the costs of expressway construction ranging from materials, labor and land acquisition has tripled since the 1990s. The transportation department will be asking for public opinion on how to best approach and set a pricing standard.
Furthermore drivers have been complaining that there are no easy or direct access to these expressways in some parts of the city and signage are often unclear or inadequate. Also GPS applications on mobile phones have yet to update to include the new expressways.
Transportation experts say that usually these new expressway suffer from losses for the first three years of their operation.
