City Starts Enforcing New Smoking Law
Since the enforcement of the new smoking regulations after the seven day grace period around 37 people were caught smoking in non smoking places and were fined accordingly. More than 2,500 enforcement officers from seven government departments inspected these non smoking places since Saturday. Those caught violating the law were fined 50 to 500 yuan and venues were fined 30,000 yuan for not enforcing the new regulations.
All fines collected will be handed over the finance department of the city. one resident was caught smoking in Lianhua Hill Park as he thought smoking was allowed in outdoor areas of the park, he didn’t notice the two large non smoking signs near the main gate which warn residents of the smoking ban.
Enforcement of the new law will be intense during this week until Friday, then on April 14 to 20 and on May 19 to 25. Then enforcement will be regular after. A law professor said that these departments will be facing challenges in enforcing the new regulations since the city is facing insufficient manpower which might lead to weak enforcement.
