Shortage in Job Seekers Forces Fair to Close Earlier
A shortage in available labor in the Pearl River Delta is wreaking havoc to the labor industry on the Shenzhen job market as the annual job fair in the city ended half a day earlier due to the shortage of job seekers. The fair opened on Wednesday morning and closed shortly after around 2 pm as most of the booths were already vacant by noon.
A human resource manager said that there aren’t that much job seekers during the fair, even when they left their booth at noon they only received a handful of applications. Fair organizer Pengcheng Human Resources Co. declined to answer media questions unlike before they answered everytime after every job fair. Several employees of Pencheng said that they will not know the number of jobseekers who visited the fair until they officially closed the fair in the evening.
The ob fair is held in Shenzhen around 70 times since 1999 and has hosted around 32,000 job seekers in the past years. but for this year, the fiar only received a few thousand as one human resource manager said that even when they were offering a lot of open positions only a handful of applications were received.
Since the Spring Festival the city has suffered a shortage of around 200,000 laborers with security guards are in the most demand. Companies also opted to increase salaries in hopes to attract more workers.
