More Mobile Book Stands to be Installed in Residential Communities
Staffs of the Shenzhen city library is planning to install around 20 mobile library stands at local residential communities before the year ends. An employee of the library said that more residents are asking the library for free self service library stands in various places inside residential communities, wherein residents can use their library cards in choosing and returning books to the stand.
Residential communities where this vending machine sized books stands are installed will not incur any costs that is related in maintaining these stands since their electric bill and network consumption will be covered by the local government but property manager can lend a hand in doing simple maintenance of the machines. As of the moment the city has 200 mobile library stands on busy streets in large residential communities and industrial parks.
Li said residential communities don’t incur any costs related to the self-service stands, as their electric bills and network connections are covered by local government, but property managers can assume partial responsibility for simple maintenance.
Since 2008 applications for a mobile library has been available but didn’t gather much attention until recently as the local government has listed an expansion of the program in the yearly budgetary item for social well being. Research showed that a study done by a third party noted that self service stands provide readers in a radius of 2 kilometers, but readership is not only the basis that lead to the installation of the stand. A self service library installed in a remote area might be the only resource available for nearby residents in getting access to books which is effective in promoting reading even in places with low readership.
