City to Strengthen Protection of City’s Water Source
The city is planning to set up an enforcement office that will strengthen the protection of the water source in Dongjiang River. The city water authorities started the river water source project in 2010, as the project diverts the water in the Dongjiang River into Shenzhen to ease the increase in water demand in the city. the Dongjiang River is said to be the main source of water of Shenzhen.
A spokesperson for the water affairs bureau stated that the majority of the water project sites are found in rural/urban fringe zones wherein encroachment into project land, destruction of facilities, overloaded vehicles and waste dumping in the river can be seen frequently. Furthermore an ineffective enforcement of the law and lack of regulations hindered the protection of the water source. The water bureau is also considering creating a police station and will be supervised by the Shenzhen Dongjiang Water Source Project Management Division and also by another division of the same office that is situated in Guangdong Province to help strengthen the water protection laws.
Around 170 scholars, volunteers and officials coming from the Jiangxi Province, Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangdong Province and Sichuan have attended a forum and exchanged ideas on how to further protect and sustain the development of the Dongjiang River.
