Free Lodging Program Initiated by Futian District Needs More Attention
The program initiated by Futian District that provided free short term lodging to new graduates who came took the chance to live in the district drew little attention and most of the beds that were offered remain vacant. Organizers said that one of the problems on why there are vacant beds is due to the lack of awareness in the public.
The Youngsters Hotel in Bagua in Futian has allotted six rooms with 48 beds and provides beddings, computers with Wi-Fi Access and air conditioning and fresh graduates can stay up to a week in the hotel for free through the program. Graduates taking advantage of the hotel’s facilities joined its Webo, WeChat and QQ groups which offered local work information. Furthermore district officials invites career specialists regularly to speak to the graduates living in the hotel and also offer various information about the city and social events. A lot of college graduates are coming to live in Shenzhen to look for work each year, but due to the high cost of housing and the difficulty of looking for work are two of the obstacles that face them.
The Youngsters Hotel opened its doors last October and has already provided free lodging to more than 110 graduates and 90 percent of these graduates have already found work before they left the hotel. District officials are planning to increase the number of beds to a hundred by June and will also encourage residents and businesses to lend a hand in the program by donating.
