Pipelines to Extend Coverage to Subdistricts in the City
Before the year ends all natural gas pipelines will be extended to all sub-districts in Shenzhen. According to the president of Shenzhen Gas Corp Li Zhen, the city’s municipal infrastructure has more than 4,000 kilometers of natural gas pipelines that covers 96 percent of Nanshan, Yantian, Futian and Luohu districts.
The natural gas pipelines covers half of the other districts and new areas in Shenzhen and based on government plans, another 110 kilometers of natural gas pipelines that is said to be completed by the end of the year and will be reaching other remote areas such as Guanlan, Shiyan, Nan’ao and Shiyan. The Shuiwei urban village in Futian is notably the first urban village that will benefit from the access of the natural gas that will be delivered using the pipelines.
As of the moment there are around 300 urban villages with no natural gas pipeline linkage. Most of the residents living in urban villages are using cylinder gas in cooking and heating their homes. Work on the pipes is ongoing and the natural gas pipelines is expected to reach Shuiwei before the year ends.
Last year also saw several pipelines were destroyed by construction projects that cut the supply to more than a thousand households. This prompted the government to ask contractors to be aware of the natural gas pipeline safety and take the proper measures in ensuring that no more pipes will be destroyed. Gas companies are also encouraging boiler users to use natural gas rather than petrol.
Around 600 boiler users have completed the switch to natural gas and 600 more is expected to switch to natural gas by 2016. Once switched these boilers will consume 450 million cubic meters of cleaner fuel that will help achieve a carbon emission reduction of 240,000 tons a year.
