Beijing to Invest 86 Billion in New Airport
As congestion still continues to clogs the runways and airport gates at the Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing is planning to construct a new airport in the south at the cost of 86 billion yuan. The new facility will border on Hebei Province can handle around 72 million passengers and around 2 million tons of cargo annually. The shortage of slots in major airports in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing together with the restricted air corridors of the country can cause constant delays at airports.
Built in 1958 the Beijing Capital International Airport was already operating well beyond their designed capacity of 80 million passengers a year. In 2013 the airport handled more than 83 million passengers. Airports in China have handled a total of 754 million passengers in 2013 which is up 11 percent compared to 2012 and 86 percent from five years ago.
Congestion and delays is set to get worse as manufacturers have estimated that one new plane will be flying China skies every other day for the next 20 years. And by 2015, Beijing is expected tohandle 113 million passengers a year and will increase to 142 million by 2020.
