Clock Tower to Undergo 80 day Renovation
The four faced landmark clock tower of Hualian Building on Shennan Road Central will undergo an 80 day renovation which started last Saturday. The clock tower which was built in 1980 measure around 8.4 meters on each side and is said to be the largest clock tower in Asia after its completion in 1988. The clock tower is 100 meter above the ground and is said to be visible from several pars of Luohu and Futian. The clock bared witness to the city’s development over the past 20 years.
The decade old clock is facing aging problems and several parts of the clock is already worn out. Each side of the clock is telling different times since 2012 even when its keeper Hualian Development Group is constant with the clock’s maintenance. And employee of Hualian said that the clock is in need of repairing which will take several months since some parts of the clock are difficult to find since the clock’s manufacturer has closed its doors since 2000.
Once the work on the clock is finished, the mechanical controlled clock will now be replaced by a computerized controlled one that will ensure punctuality and efficiency. The clock face and its hands will also be replaced with aluminum alloy to make it rust proof and its fluorescent lights will be replaced by LED lights for energy saving. The clock’s sound effect will remain the same as the people have already grown accustomed to its sounds.
