Volunteer Team Created to Assist Foriegn Patients in Hospital
A volunteer team is being assembled by the Peking University Shenzhen Hospital to assist expatriates coming in for treatments who don’t speak the language to communicate with doctors. The volunteers must be fluent in both English and Chinese language and is required to help in the English guiding services at the International and VIP Health Center and at the center’s emergency room.
According to the center’s director, the volunteer will be helping expats in seeking he treatment of doctors, get checkups and understand its results and on how to take medication that comes with the treatment. These volunteers will also act as guides to assist international guests when attending any academic conferences held at the center. As of the moment around 47 residents have signed including eight foreigners to be volunteers at the center.
Most of the volunteers are nurses and doctors at the hospital and from the eight foreign volunteers, four of them are interns from the Dalian Medical University while the remaining four are students from Quality Schools International. One student said that by volunteering he gets to practice speaking English and Chinese while getting medical knowledge.
In addition these students were already able to help by correcting the English signs that are setup in hospital that directs expat patients around the center. These students will also act as volunteer teachers in an English corner that is also setup in the center to help volunteers practice, they will also undergo training to broaden their medical vocabulary.
