District to Start Banning the Selling of Live Poultry
Based on a planned pilot program the city will be banning the sale of live chickens in Futian. Aside from banning its sales, the pilot plan will also include the centralized slaughtering of chickens, refrigeration and delivery of fresh chickens as well. The ban will also apply tp farm produce markets, restaurants, supermarkets and other public places. Those caught selling or slaughtering live chickens will be punished.
Found in the central portion of the district, the Futian farm produce wholesale market hasn’t seen any sales of live poultry and now the market is looking at a sharp drop in sales since the beginning of last year due to the outbreak of bird flu which prompted the selling of poultry to a halt. The market used to have 30 booths selling live poultry everyday and in the busiest day can sell of up to 500 live chickens.
Now only freshly slaughtered chickens are being sold in markets. Once the pilot program is fully established in Futian, it will be then be extended to Yantian, Luohu and Nanshan districts but no time table is been released. Guangzhou has already started the ban of selling live poultry in its markets in selected locations and districts in May. Sellers of live poultry can apply for subsidies that will allow them to switch from selling to live chickens to selling of fresh slaughtered ones.
